Matteo Soprani

Matteo Soprani was born in Carpi (Modena, Italy) on October 13th 1991. In April 2016 he received the MSc degree in Food Safety and Security (summa con laude) at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy. In March 2020 he received the PhD degree in Information Engineering at the University of Brescia, Italy and currently, he is a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Nora’s Research Group at University of Brescia.

Matteo’s research activity is focused in the design, development and manufacture of new environmental-friendly and low-cost gas sensors with the purpose to transform sensors into fully functional portable systems for their application in fields such as healthcare, agriculture and food security. In particular, his work focuses on the development of portable, paper-based electro-ionic gas sensors and their application in the real-time monitoring of food spoilage by attempting to monitor the volatile compounds released by food in its headspace inside food packages. The technology opens the way to realise a real food smart packaging, which will be characterized by paper-based electro-ionic gas sensors and communication elements such as NFC able to exchange collected information about the food degradation in real-time via wireless communication with external read-out units like a smartphone in supermarkets, stores, in a food supply chain facility, or at home.
